SCENARIO: THE GREEDY LORD A small lumber town, in the foothills, has been having some odd trouble with orcs (or other suitable humanoid monster) recently. They keep attacking the wagons of lumber that the town sends to a nearby city. There have also been a few raids on the local farms. No one from the town has been killed in the raids, only knocked out. The local lord in response to the raids hired some trouble making mercenaries. Only the mercenaries have been slain. Because of all the trouble the taxes have been raised, and the lost lumber has meant a lot more cutting of trees (ranger or druid would be upset by this) in a more destructive manner then normal. During the attacks a few citizens have noticed that a much larger more intelligent looking orc is directing the battle (see Makito in the NPC list if you have the character generator for D&D 3ED). If the party tries to contact the local lord, they find out that the lord is late coming back from his latest trip to the city delivering the lumber. If the party decides to help the town and follow the trail back to the orcs base. They find a natural cave with the orcs and the imprisoned lord in the lowest part of the cave, which acts as the dungeon. In the dungeon part of the cave a large grate covers most of the center of the floor, with a very complex lock on it. At the bottom of the shaft under the grate is a large diamond mine. If the players talk to the orc in charge (Makito) they find out that the lord paid him to get the orcs to mine the diamonds for him, and to watch over them. But after awhile he got fed up with the lord because he never paid him, or gave them any food or supplies. The lord made him do the raids for food and lumber... which is why he imprisoned the lord. If they talk to the lord with out the orc (Makito) that is in charge around he will act like an innocent victim. If the orc (Makito) is around and has told the players the truth he will deign it for a while then he will then try to buy them off. Needless to say when the lord is returned to town the towns people will not be happy with him, and get rid of him. The town’s people may offer the job to one of the players or an NPC in the party. If the confrontation between the orc (Makito) and the party went well he might ask to join with the party. If the party stops to mine (with appropriate skill), they can get 5 to 10 gems worth approximately 100g before being cut.
